Quote of the Day #16

Stalking
What used to be stalking is now called social networking. Welcome to the Internet.
- Zack Shapiro

Apparently men have a biological clock too

(insert misogynistic joke here?)

Boys: SMH says ’tis 35. Ummm off you go.

Quote of the Day #15

“Garnaut has a horror for all: for the Federal Government it’s the idea of fixed price permits for two years, so Kevin Rudd and his ministers can’t shift the blame to the “markets” — they would have to tax companies directly; for the states and power generators it’s the proposal to make ALL polluters buy permits — none get handed out for free; for motorists it’s the inclusion of petrol; for exporters it’s that only 30% of the money is earmarked for them; and for the rest of us it’s the fact that it’s really all about China, and it’s too late anyway — the Murray Darling Basin and the Great Barrier Reef are buggered already.”
- Alan Kohler in Crikey talking about Professor Ross Garnaut’s draft report into an emissions trading scheme.

Quote of the Day #14

“The problem with being a tyrannical dictator is that there is no career path and no practical way to retire. If another dictator takes over, the first item on his agenda is turning your head into a bird feeder for his guest house. If democracy breaks out, sooner or later the mob will want to execute you for crimes against humanity. As a tyrant, your only rational strategy is continued brutal suppression of your peeps. That’s a lot of work for the tyrant, and no fun for the peeps.”
- Scott Adams

Telstra’s showcase of holographic messaging

I’ve taken a couple of days to process Telstra’s presentation the other day of a working example of a hologram.

Holographic Messaging

On one hand I love it because it is Star Wars cool.

But on the other - I can’t help but think about the current situation of mobile phone black spots and broadband uncompetition as well as the gargantuan fees that will be associated with this future service.

Read some of the news reports and decide for yourself.

Beverly Hills Cop 4

Variety is saying Axel Foley will be reprised for a fourth time.

This is one of the few movie sequals I don’t mind coming back so long as Chevy Chase also returns to the screen to make Fletch 3 and joins Bill Murray in Caddyshack 3.

Update: OMG! Fletch 3 is being remade! Joshua Jackson Pacey is rumored be playing ‘Fletch’.

Gargantuan - Word of the Week #2

gar·gan·tu·an
adj.
Of immense size, volume, or capacity; gigantic.

- Sighted in Russell Crowe’s media statement as he was channeling his inner Marcus Aurelius when heaping praise upon his former business partner’s failed effort in the role as CEO of the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Boned

Boned Book Cover

Boned a novel written anonymously about an Australian TV network has got the media in a tiz over the last few days. Published by Penguin Australia has a plot that is a thinly veiled rehash of the notorious 2006 axing of then Today show co-host Jessica Rowe, which destabilised the network and undermined confidence in McGuire’s leadership (via news.com.au) and brought the excellent word “Boned” into the Australia vernacular.

- You can read an extract from Boned at The Daily Telegraph.

- Suspected author Tracey Spicer gives us her review.

- Crikey speculates who could have written it:

Just about every female who has ever been boned or even prodded in commercial television has been suggested as the potential author, with the most recent gossip to reach our ears centering around Gretel Killeen – who already has a number of books, mostly for children, to her name and who was dumped as anchorwoman for Ten’s Big Brother late last year.
via Crikey subscription only

As do news.com.au when they cast a very wide net naming up to 20 suspected authors including Paul Barry, Mark Llewellyn, Jessica Rowe, Gerald Stone, Jana Wendt, Mia Freedman and even Vince Colosimo who they bizarely claim may have wrote it because His character was killed off in the first episode (of Underbelly), and now he’s missing out on the show’s soaring weekly ratings. via news.com.au

Shock! World’s largest drawing is a fake!

Largest Drawing in the World

A lot of people in the last week posted the above image on their blogs and in news stories with the story of Swedish artist Erik Nordenankar who…

…sent a briefcase with a GPS tracking device around the world via DHL. The route the case took, as tracked on a map, became the strokes of his drawing.
via Ze Frank

Unfortunately, as the UK’s Telegraph points out as does the artist’s own web site The Biggest Drawing in the World is a work of fiction.

You have to love Internet user gullibility.

The hosts for Top Gear Australia are…

The much anticipated announcement of who will be hosting Top Gear Australia which will go to air in August was announced by SBS last night. Charlie Cox, Warren Brown and Steve Pizzati got the nod.

All come with motoring backgrounds and media experience. Cox is a racing driver and current director of DMG Radio, Brown is The Daily Telegraph’s cartoonist and Pizzati is a driving instructor and Porsche Cup racing driver.

While it was obviously a sought-after gig with over 4000 people applying, it will be a tough thing for these three to try and pull off considering they will be standing in the shadows of giants that are cast from the BBC show’s hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May.

Predictably ‘The Stig’ hasn’t been announced but I will put my money on James Courtney being the white racing suited helmeted one for the Aussie show.

‘The Angry Prawn’ already online

I really enjoyed last night’s episode of the The Gruen Transfer.

Anything that gives some insights into the hidden persuasions of commercial messages is a good thing. Plus, Wil Anderson is funnier on the telly than he is on the radio which made the show a good watch.

I’m not getting all Friends of the ABC like with indignation as I think this is quite cool but one of the faux concepts that was pitched as an advertisement to make whale hunting and whale meat acceptable in Australia is already online.

I give you ‘The Angry Prawn’ by Jack Watts Currie

The Angry Prawn

Yay for multi-platform integrated communications that pushes the boundaries while extending a brand’s reach with interactive consumer experiences.

Update: Seems the show rated its ads off as it drew an audience of 1.287 million.

2008 BRW Rich List Announced

2008 BRW Rich List

The annual celebration of money that is the publication of the BRW Rich 200 which lists Australia’s wealthiest individuals has been released.

Andrew Forrest takes the top spot, James Packer drops down a few notches and Alan Bond rejoins the world of ubiquitous cash. All great news for those involved I guess but kind of depressing for the rest of us who are struggling.

You can find news reports at The Australian, Business Day, news.com.au, Ninemsn and goldcoast.com.au.

If you’re interested in snooping at the financials of more Australians, Stephen Mayne has published The Mayne Report Rich List which has 1000 names.

Also, a few years ago the The Big Issue did a ‘Poor 200′ edition to highlight the crisis facing homeless people in major cities. In the week of the BRW Rich 200 it would be good if we all got into the habit of investing in the $5 cover price of The Big Issue’s fine magazine each week to support a group of entrepreneurs who don’t have share options and mountains of filthy lucre.

Overachieving high school rock stars

When I was in high school I was still playing hand ball. Rad 13-17 year old overachievers these days are in really good bands. Yes, I was am lame but is still an impressive effort of creativity and commitment from the always maligned Gen Y kids.

Triple J have searched for the best high school bands in the country and now the finalists have been announced.

Go to triple j Unearthed to see who made the final and listen to their songs.

The future of Melbourne - have your say!

Future Melbourne Wiki

The City of Melbourne has embraced Web 2.0 by ensuring people can provide input and discuss their city planning ideas at the Future Melbourne Wiki.

This is the first major online community consultation for local government I’ve seen initiated here in Australia. Kudos City of Melbourne!

Attention Melbournites: be sure to have your say and take advantage of this excellent site so what you think and feel the city should be like in the future is accounted for in policy development.
