Hide this news from Daryl and Red

Readers under 18 years of age might not realise that Saturday nights used to be filled with even greater levels of TV lameness than they are now with a show called Hey Hey It’s Saturday.

For the last 9 years we have been spared from all the awfulness associated with the show. Sure, Daryl Somers has been back on the box with the dancing show and Red Symons pops up on ABC TV’s the Einstein Factor among other shows. But we have thankfully been relieved of the whole thing returning for a special or even a segment being spun off.

However, this could change with news that in America Adam Sandler’s production company has announced that a very Red Faces like program called The Gong Show will be going to air shortly.

Originally hosted by Chuck Barris The Gong Show was the polyester-clad, short bus version of America’s Got Talent. Each episode would force Jaye P. Morgan, Artie Johnson and some other now (possibly) deceased 70s TV celeb to watch the best, homespun talent that ever tornado’d out of a Kansas trailer park. When the les arts became unbearable, a single bang on the gong would end the suffering.

*shudder*

We all know how creative Australian television executives are when it comes to programming decisions and new ideas. So lets just hope that Daryl and Red don’t find out or they’ll be telling every exec at 7, 9 and 10 about this hot new trend overseas.
